A Malawi police officer at area 30 in Lilongwe which is the country’s police headquarter was on Tuesday arrested together with two civilians over illegal possession of ivory Maravi post has established.
According to our internal source that opted for a condition of anonymity, the three are suspected that they were planning to smuggle the ivory.
“Indeed three people are in custody here after illegally found with ivory. Among the three one is a police officer,” said our source.
“According to the preliminary investigation we conducted, the suspects planned to take the ivory outside the country,” they added.
They further said “it is also suspected that the two civilians are the dealers of ivory and that the man in uniform was there to assist them.”
Mean while police are yet to comment on the matter.
Recently, the police arrested three people in Machinga and detained US Deputy Ambassador to Malawi at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) over the same crime.
Officials of the Liwonde National Park in Machinga told our reporter that at least 2000 elephants have been killed for their ivory in the last few days.
