Malawi President Peter Mutharika appealed to staff of the national Parliament currently on strike to go back to work as discussions on their salary issue is underway.
The staff started a sit-in on Tuesday demanding a salary increase, a situation that halted parliament’s deliberations which started the same day.
President Mutharika told journalists in the capital Lilongwe on Tuesday that he had already discussed with the Speaker of Parliament and soon the strike will end.
“We have put offers on the table regarding the salary increase and we are hopeful that the staff will accept them,” he said.
President Mutharika added that these offers are meant to harmonize salaries for employees at Parliament with those of the civil service.
He said they have offered equal pay for equal work, meaning that a driver at Parliament should be at par with the one in the civil service.
Meanwhile, it was reported Wednesday that the employees have gone back to work and members of parliament have since started their deliberations on the mid-year review for the 2014/15 national budget.
