The Malawi Government wishes to assure the public that, contrary to some commentators, state resources were not used during the commemoration events of the arrest of President Mutharika and others that took place on 11th March 2015 in Lilongwe.
Minister of Information, Tourism and Culture Kondwani Nankhumwa released a statement that indicated that every individual used their personal resources.
As for the participation of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and the Malawi News Agency (MANA), government feels they made their own editorial decisions like the private media to cover the event. No one cajoled them to provide the coverage.
With regard to security establishment, they are obligated to provide security to the President at all times.
According to the statement made available to The Maravi Post and other media outlets, Government believes that observance of the day was a powerful symbol for reminding and assuring the public that ‘Never Again’ will government abuse its powers to settle scores with political opponents.
The administration of State President His Excellency President Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika’s remains committed to respect the rule of law, leave state institutions to do their work professionally without political interference.
At the same time, all public resources will be safeguarded to be used solely for the purposes of improving the lives of the people of Malawi.
