Lilongwe, April 3, 2015: President Prof. Peter Mutharika on Friday called upon Christians in the country to remain united despite some differences in faith and beliefs.
President Mutharika said this in Lilongwe at Don Bosco Parish Church where he was amongst Christians observing Good Friday by Way of the Cross.
This comes amid a back ground that Christians from the Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran Churches on Friday joined hands in observing Good Friday which symbolises the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Said Mutharika; “I am so happy today to see the unity that exists between various churches in Malawi. Today we have walked together on this Way of the Cross as if we were from the same family, this is what my Government encourages.
“Our difference in faith and beliefs should not divide us, but rather bring us together as we have done today as it is said that there is power in unity.’’
President Mutharika further called for love between one another as it is one on God’s commandments.
“Lenten season is a time to Christians as it gives us time to reflect on our lives by looking at the cross where our salvation comes from. It also gives us time to reflect on our lives and encourages us to do charity work.
“Let me take this opportunity to appeal to you all to continue doing the charity work that you started as the season demands us as Christians to, for many people today are in various problems,” he appealed.
Speaking earlier Bishop Joseph Bvumbwe of Lutheran Church hailed the President for honoring their request to be amongst the Christians observing Good Friday at Don Bosco Parish.
“For the past years, it has been our dream to have a Head of State among us, this dream has come to pass today with your presence your Excellency, we are so thankful for this honor, “said Bishop Bvumbwe.
The Way of the Cross started from Utatu Oyera Catholic in Chilinde all the way to Don Bosco Catholic Church.
President Mutharika joined the congregation at the parish’s entrance and he also helped in carrying the cross which Christians carried at various intervals from Chilinde.
The way of the cross symbolizes the journey that Jesus Christ walked as he was taken to be crucified and it consists of 14 stations.
