State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has reiterated his call that Malawi has enough maize and that people in the country must not panic.
President Mutharika made these remarks on Monday afternoon in which he ably managed to give out statistics showing that the country has over 60 000 metric tonnes of maize in Admarc depots.
Mutharika’s statement comes days after Catholic bishops in the country asked the government to do something on the food situation.
“We have data on how much maize each Admarc depot is stocking from Nsanje to Chitipa, how many trucks of maize are being cleared and how many are on their way to Admarc depots.
“So trust me that 62000 metric tonnes are enough to take Malawi to next year so Malawians must never panic,” said Mutharika.
The Malawi leader also said the problem of vendors in all markets is a major concern as it is making the accessibility of the grain to be hard among Malawians.
Two weeks ago the parliamentary committee on Agriculture and some officials from the Ministry of Agriculture witnessed the clearing of part of the 70 trucks that are bringing in Maize from Zambia at Mchinji border.
