Lilongwe, January 18, 2019:Malawi Red Cross Society Thursday donated K5 million to 148, 000 households that were recently hit by flush floods in Lilongwe.
Malawi Red Cross Preparedness and Cultivation Specialist Ruster Alufandiko said the organisation decided to give cash to every household for them to decide how to spend the money depending on their immediate needs.
“We thought it wise to give each household K39, 500 cash because we learned that last year’s flood victims sold some of the relief items we gave them,” said Alufandiko after the donation at Chipasula.
Lilongwe City’s Disaster Risk Management Coordinator Catherine Kunje commended the Malawi Red Cross for the donation.
She advised people to stop constructing houses along river banks to avoid losing lives and property.
The flush floods wrecked havoc in Area 24, Biwi, Kaliyeka and Chipasula, among other areas in the city.
“Since 2012, people around these areas have been experiencing floods because their houses are along the river banks,” Kunje said.
One of the beneficiaries Mackson Ndala said the money will help them to buy some food and property.
“I lost half of my property including beddings, kitchen utensils and plasma screens,” he said.
