Heavy rains have destroyed houses and properties belonging to almost hundred people in Chilumba, the southern area of Karonga district, Maravi Post can reveal.

The heavy rains which hit the area in the wee hours of Sunday was accompanied by strong winds which brew out houses felling trees in its wake.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Maravi Post, one of the victim Mathews Sayi said he is now staying in a house with an open roof.
Sayi revealed that most of their household properties have been destroyed by the rains.
He said the destruction of houses in the area has happened at a bad time as the area has no grasses to thatch their houses and at a time that parents are budgeting for school fees and associated materials.
“I am stranded right now, I don’t know where and how to start. I’ve nothing as of now. I invested the little money I had in farming,” said Sayi.
The heavy rains ruined the community’s New Year eve celebration.
The district disaster officer could not be reached for a comment.
Meanwhile, the community is calling for help from government and other well-wishers.
