Globetrotting People’s Party (PP) leader, Joyce Banda has not been seen in Malawi for over 3 months. A few party insiders say she is in the United Kingdom (UK) for unknown period of time and might have extended her visa.

Meantime back in Malawi ambitious Brown Mpinganjira appears to be acting as party leader at the moment in her absence. Joyce Banda beware of Brown Mpinganjira who nurses ambitions of being President one day.

Brown Mpinganjira broke with Bakili Muluzi over the latter’s attempt to have the constitution changed so that he could run for a third term of office. Mpinganjira formed his own party, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). In the 2004 presidential election, he placed fourth, receiving only 8.7% of the vote.

Since then Brown Mpinganjira has gone back and forth between parties trying to find the right party that would elevate him to the Presidency. The Party of choice is for now Joyce Banda’s peoples party.

Joyce Banda’s long absence from the country has made the party to remain without a leader in the country. This has created a vacuum for Brown Mpinganjira.

PP Publicity Secretary Ken Msonda is telling people that Leader Joyce Banda is in the UK even though she has not made any public appearences in that country or anywhere in the past two months.

Joyce Banda has been at large since the May 20 polls and was recently implicated in government CCTV footages, and that she is the biggest beneficiary of cashgate as accused by Osward Lutepo.

Joyce Banda has been citing the Baker Tilly report which did not name her as a vindication. However as many suspect that she might be the big Target and people in the know think she can mount a better defence while in a western country as she appears to enjoy more support in those countries and they might be reluctant to assist the Malawi Government in the prosecution of her.

The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) recently downplayed reports that it had issued a warrant of arrest for the former leader. However there is they saying where there is smoke there is a fire. Someone must have started that rumour either to unsettle her or just to measure the temperature. It appears to have gotten a very quick reaction from her as she threatened to sue a South African paper for publishing that indeed there was a warrant issued for her arrest.

Msonda meantime the only loud defender of Joyce Banda accused Mutharika’s Government of implicating JB, to divert attention from their own MK 92 Billion mini cash gate which emanated during former leader late Bingu wa Mutharika era in 2005.

At the moment, progress of Cashgate probe and prosecution has stalled following the industrial actions by judiciary and ACB staff in demand for salary hikes.

Where ever the former President of Malawi Joyce Banda is residing, She would be advised to keep a watchful eye on Brown Mpinganjira who is known to have aspirations of being a President one day.
