LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s Under 20 women’s national football team have placed themselves on the brink of history after a breathtaking performance that kept their World Cup dream alive.
The Young Scorchers are now just one tie away from a first ever appearance on the global stage.
Inside a buzzing Bingu National Stadium,on Saturday the hosts produced a ruthless second half display to dismantle Guinea Bissau women’s national U-20 football team 5-1, sealing a convincing 6-2 aggregate triumph.It was a victory built on resilience, belief and tactical maturity.
The afternoon, however, began with a shock. Guinea Bissau’s Lamarana Bali stunned the home crowd with a goal in just the second minute, threatening to disrupt Malawi’s rhythm and confidence.
But the response was immediate and emphatic.
Alinafe Milanzie equalised fourth minutes later, restoring calm and igniting fresh energy among the supporters who had come to rally behind their team.
At halftime, the contest remained finely balanced. Coach Maggie Chombo Sadick knew her players had more to give and her team talk during the break proved decisive.

Substitute Fatima Lali then took centre stage. Introduced in the latter stages, she calmly slotted home in the 72nd minute to stretch the lead and crush Guinea Bissau’s resistance.
Mayamiko Mkandawire added gloss to the scoreline with a thunderous long range effort in the 83rd minute, a goal that reflected the team’s growing confidence and technical quality.
Lali completed her brace deep into stoppage time, capping a memorable outing and sending fans into wild celebration.

Meanwhile, the final hurdle has now been confirmed. Nigeria edged Senegal 2-1 to book their place in the decisive round, setting up a high stakes showdown with Malawi.
The Young Scorchers will now face Nigeria in the final qualifying round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, with the winner over two legs earning a ticket to the global finals.
