Malawi Secondary School teachers have threatened to boycott their work especially during the opening of 2016 to 2017 academic calendar due to government failure to pay their allowances.The revelation was made during the press conference in Lilongwe organized by the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM). Speaking during the meeting, TUM President Chauluka Muwake said they have already communicated  their stand to government on the matter.

“These are the 2016 MSCE national exams supervision and invigilating allowances. Despite that the allowances concern few teachers; the strike will be for all teachers as one family.

“As secondary teachers, we believe that this teach a lesson to government,” he added.

He said “government deceived us that it has already disbursed K1.4 billion for supervision and invigilation.”

The TUM President also attacked government for delaying their July salaries saying it has really affected them.

However, spokesperson for the ministry of finance Nations Msowoya trashed TUM for always rushing to the media.

“TUM should learn to discuss such kind of things to the relevant people than rushing to the media,” said Msowoya.

According to him government is doing everything to meet the teachers’ demand so that the development should not affect learners.
