LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Ministers responsible for Water, Agriculture, Lands, Energy and Local Government from Malawi and Tanzania, held the first Ordinary Meeting of the Council of Ministers for the Joint Songwe River Basin Development Program (SRBDP) commission at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe on March 9, 2022.
The USD$577 million project seeks to address the problem of shifting of the river course, resulting in shifting in boundaries on Songwe River.
The project will enhance basin protection, livelihoods, and integrated water resources management through improved trans-boundary cooperation and sustained ecosystem services.
According to the Co-Chairperson of the Council of Ministers; Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Sidik Mia, the main component of the SRBDP is the construction of a 180 Megawatts hydro-power plant at Songwe Dam that will be shared equally between the two nations.
The project will also construct a 6,200 hectares irrigation scheme; 3,050 hectare
