MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Teachers’ sit in and demonstrations are more likely to go into a third day tomorrow as the teachers continue to down tools until they start to receive the long awaited December salaries.
According to the General Secretary for Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM), Charles Kumchenga, the teachers will not relent but to continue with their sit in so that those teachers who missed their December salaries are honoured.
Kumchenga was speaking today during the two day sit in and demonstrations which started yesterday and seem not to have an end.
“We are not going back to class until the last person of all the 5, 000 teachers who missed their salaries last month, receives it. Government is not responding to our conceens. So, we are only waiting for the government to pay the teachers,” said Kumchenga.
But reacting to the teachers stand, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST), Dr Justin Saidi said government has already started to deposit money in the account of teachers such that every will receive his or her salary before close of business on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the situation got out of control as learners in some schools in Dowa and Mzuzu took to the streets in protest against failure by their teachers to teach them. In Mzuzu, it took the efforts of the police to contain the situation.
Primary and secondary school teachers in the country started sit in on Monday in order to force the government to pay those teachers who missed their salaries in December last year.
