Malawi will important grass from South Africa for the modern Bingu National Stadium being built with funding from Chinese government.
Chief Architect in the Ministry of Lands Knight Munthali said that all logical arrangements had been put in place to bring the non-slippery and drought resistant grass.
“I can confirm that procure process is at an advanced stage as we are making final arrangements to start the importation of the grass,” Munthali said who did not mention the cost of the buying the grass.
He said the Ahnui Foreign Construction Company, Chinese firm, had identified Cynodon Dectylon speciesl grass for the stadium.
He said the playing field would be the only part of the stadium to be covered by the grass while the upper stadium will wear locally sourced grass.
The stadium will also have a synthetic running track for athletics.
The stadium is being built with funding from the Chinese government to the tune of US$70 million (29 billion).
Once completed 85 percent of the stadium will have covered stands, flood lights.
This will be home to the Flames after Kamuzu Stadium and Civo Stadium were condemned unfit for international matches by Fifa and CAF.
