Malawi U-17 start COSAFA campaign with convincing win over Madagascar

HARARE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Under-17 national football team got off to a flying start at the ongoing CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations COSAFA Qualifiers with a 3-1 victory over Madagascar at Ngoni MWOS Stadium in Zimbabwe on Friday.

The young Flames displayed resilience and attacking flair, setting a strong foundation for their Group B campaign.

Goals from Joel Maziya and James Lumbe, along with an own goal by Madagascar defender Irintsoa Rakotoharimalala, sealed the important three points for Malawi.

Madagascar’s consolation goal came late in the match through William Rambeloson but it was too little, too late for the island nation.

The match started at a high tempo, with Malawi quickly asserting dominance in midfield.

Maziya opened the scoring in the 14 minute, calmly slotting home after a well worked team move that began from the back.

His goal settled the team’s nerves and gave them the confidence to dictate the game.

Malawi doubled their lead just before halftime when Lumbe rose highest to head in a well delivered corner kick.

At this point, the young Flames were in full control and could have added more goals had they been more clinical in front of goal.

The second half saw Madagascar attempt a comeback but Malawi’s defense held firm. In the 60 minute, a Madagascar defender accidentally turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous cross, giving Malawi a 3-0 lead and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Madagascar, however refused to go down without a fight.

Rambeloson pulled one back for his side in the 90+3 minute with a powerful strike from close range but Malawi remained disciplined to secure the win.

Speaking after the match, Malawi head coach Enos Chatama praised his players for their strong performance, though he acknowledged there were areas to improve.

“Although we created many chances, I feel we could have been more precise with our finishing. I am happy with the way the boys played today but we need to address a few issues before our next match,” Chatama said.

The coach emphasized that the next fixture will be even more crucial as the young Flames face regional giants Zambia on Sunday.

“Zambia are a very strong side, and the game will be a real test for us. We need to approach it with the same determination and hunger for victory,” he added.

Malawi’s victory gives them a perfect start in Group B, boosting their chances of progressing to the knockout stages of the tournament.

Only the top team from the group is guaranteed a place at next year’s CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, making every point vital.

The young Flames will conclude their group campaign against South Africa on Tuesday next week.

A win in either of their remaining games could be enough to secure qualification, depending on other results.
