The renowned Malawi poet Robert Chiwamba has been criticized for attacking the county’s national football team in his newly released poem titled “flames siizatheka.”
Chiwamba released his contentious poem last week where he questions the attitude and superiority of flames players as well as coaches correspondingly.
According to the veteran flames midfield Chimango Kayira and Karonga based football commentator Fancy Sayi, the poem is intimidating the national team players and coaches.
“Chiwamba is a genius, we cannot take away that from him but it’s high time he started using his talent in a constructive manner, why is he always castigating and talking negative things about his own country?
“where was he when we won (flames) the COSAFA plate last year, as an artist he should craving for platform on the national market and not making fun of fellow Malawians”, it’s a waste of talent I think, said Chimango.
He further said “Chiwamba is wasting his talent because he is only interested in castigating and making fun of fellow Malawians in his poems.”
Sayi concurred with Chimango saying “the poem is poorly timed considering that the flames are playing Zimbabwe on AFCON qualifiers this weekend and might bring negativity in the team.”
“I think it is important to remain positive even in bad times, our team are preparing for important game on Saturday and there comes this message on the poem, I don’t think it has come at the right time, the players need encouragement and all possible support”, he added.
However, Chiwamba ruled out claims that he is being unpatriotic insisting he loves the Malawi national team unconditionally while urging people to learn from criticisms.
“Flames is our national treasure, its successes are mine too as its failures, so as we celebrate its achievements together, lets also learn to accept constructive criticisms and change for the better”, said Chiwamba.
“Flames siizamva, flames ndi nkhutukumve, pakafika pa 89 minute uwona iyo yahedela mugolo lake lomwe kapena keeper wazinda mpira chigoli chalowa kunamizila kuvulala, nde ili ndi ma player olimba mtima , zoti team ikaluza ma player amalila nde siflames tu”, reads part of the poem.
