Malawian soldier shot himself in DRC

Malawi army in DRCA Malawi Defense Force (MDF) soldier who was on peace-keeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) shot dead himself using a K2 rifle in the wee hours of Saturday, June 20, 2015.


According to sources privy to The Maravi Post on the incident, the deceased, Corporal Lyson Manda who was working at Kamuzu Barracks, shot himself direct on the chest while in his bed in a tent at 2am in DRC.



“We were awakened by the gunshot then we rushed to scene as discovered that it was our own soldier who was lying dead in a pool of blood on his bed. We don’t know as of now what prompted him to commit suicide as he didn’t leave any note regarding that”, discloses the source.


Major Mdala, Malawi Battalion Headquarters Officer-in-charge at Seka in DRC could neither deny nor confirm the incident when responding to the local press but referring the matter to MDF Public Relation Officer, Lieutenant Chimphwanya who confirmed the incident saying MDF will come up with a statement regarding the death of Corporal Manda.


“I can confirm the death of Corporal Lyson Mandam who shot himself dead in DRC. The cause of his action will be known by the yet-to-be instituted investigation which will be available to the public soon”, confirms Chimphwanya.


 The deceased, Manda, 35 years old hailed from Kayuni village, Traditional Authority Kyungu in the northern district of Karonga.
