Malawian traders in Karonga smuggle rice and Karonga to Tanzania

Malawian traders in Karonga smuggle rice and Karonga to TanzaniaKARONGA (Maravi Post)—With 6.5 million Malawians already facing severe starvation due to poor harvests this year, some residents in Karonga are smuggling rice and maize to Tanzania MaraviPost has established.According to our source including Amos Katema of Mwangulukulu village Traditional Authority Mwakawoko the smugglers are using uncharted roots to go to Tanzania.

They said the development will attributed to the worsening hunger situation in the district as well as the country as whole.

“We are losing tones of rice day by day to Tanzania. This is because our Songwe border is porous and the smugglers are just taking an advantage,” said Katema.

“The smugglers are passing through the Rukuru River using boats but if this continues it will be a disaster,” he added.

However, Karonga Police spokesperson Enoch Livason said the police are not aware of the development.

He however said that the security will be tightened at the border post in order to deal with the development.

Despite having low maize harvest, the district harvest bumper rice this year because of floods.
