Blantyre, February 13: Blantyre Police is keeping in custody 40 year old Alice Namagoya for allegedly stealing a three-week old baby.
According to Deputy Public Relations Officer for Blantyre police, Andrew Mayawo, the suspect is married to a Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital attendant and has a secret affair with a Malawi Institute of Tourism employee whom she claimed was responsible for the ‘pregnancy’.
The suspect is said to have been friends with the mother of the baby, Bridget Maxwell. The two are residents of Soche quarry.
“She has been lying to the secret lover that she had his pregnancy which she gave birth on 16th of January. The lover therefore told the suspect to bring the child on 9th of February so he could show him to his parents,” Mayawo said.
Following the pressure, the suspect thought of stealing the child when the mother went to fetch water, according to Mayawo.
“She found the chance of getting the baby when the mother went to fetch water and left the baby lying on the mat then went on to show the secret lover and his parents,” explained Mayawo.
The secret lover and the parents however had doubts on the baby which led them to Queens Elizabeth Central Hospital for examination and the suspect was later nabbed.
Alice Namagoya hails from Pongwe Village, T/A Chikowi in Zomba and is expected to appear before court soon.
