Deputy Chief Justice Lovemore Chikopa has emphasized the importance of trust in public office, stating that public officers should retain power only as long as Malawians continue to trust them.
Speaking at the opening of an interface meeting with the media in Mponela, Dowa, Chikopa stressed that once trust is eroded, citizens have the right to demand a new office holder.
Chikopa, who is also a Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal judge, drew parallels between public officers and judicial officers, saying both serve on behalf of Malawians and wear “borrowed robes”. This concept of “borrowed authority” implies that their power is derived from the people, and they must act in the best interests of the citizens.
“A judge must be independent, not because a judge must be independent, but because Malawians live by an independent judiciary,” Chikopa said.
He emphasized that transparency, accountability, and independence are fundamental rights of Malawians, and every public officer must adhere to these principles.
Chikopa’s remarks come as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in public office.
As the first Deputy Chief Justice in Malawi’s history, appointed in April 2024, Chikopa brings a wealth of experience to the role.
He has served as a Principal Resident Magistrate, Chief Resident Magistrate, Judge of the High Court, and Justice of Appeal.
In his address, Chikopa highlighted the need for an independent judiciary, which is essential for upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served.
He also emphasized the importance of supporting the judiciary in its efforts to deliver justice, saying that the office of the Deputy Chief Justice should be a “fortress and shield” for the defense and advancement of justice.
President Lazarus Chakwera, who appointed Chikopa as Deputy Chief Justice, described the move as a significant step towards strengthening the judicial system in Malawi. Chakwera praised Chikopa for his integrity, capability, and patriotism, saying he is the right person for the job.
The appointment of a Deputy Chief Justice is expected to ease the workload of the Chief Justice and enhance the administration of justice in Malawi.
As the judiciary continues to play a crucial role in promoting justice and stability in the country, Chikopa’s leadership and vision will be instrumental in shaping the future of the Malawian justice system.
