LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Civil Society Elections Integrity Forum (CSEIF) has strongly condemned what it described as a series of coordinated smear campaigns, threats and attacks targeting Human Rights Defenders (HRDC) as the country awaits the official announcement of results from the September 16 general elections.
In a statement issued on Thursday, CSEIF dismissed allegations that HRDC were “plotting to stop Arthur Peter Mutharika from taking over government” as baseless, malicious and a direct assault on Malawi’s democratic order.
“These reckless claims, made without any declaration from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), only serve to inflame tensions and undermine public trust in institutions that are mandated to uphold the rule of law,” read the statement signed by CSEIF Chairperson Benedicto Kondowe.
CSEIF reminded the public that MEC is the only body constitutionally mandated to verify, tally and announce election results.
The grouping stressed that any attempts to disrupt or manipulate the process violate constitutional provisions including Sections 32, 34, 35, 37, 38, 40 and 77 of the Constitution.
“HRDs are not enemies of democracy they are its guardians. They do not serve partisan interests but rather protect the sanctity of the vote, defend rights, and ensure that the people’s will is respected,”CSEIF emphasized.
The watchdog group expressed concern over a false online publication alleging that CSEIF had pressured MEC to release results immediately.
The organization denied these claims, saying it has consistently urged all parties to exercise patience and allow MEC to carry out its duties lawfully and peacefully.
CSEIF warned that it would take legal action against individuals or groups spreading falsehoods, both locally and internationally, including prosecution without recourse.
It also urged the Malawi Police Service to act decisively to protect HRDC from harm and called on political parties to restrain their followers from engaging in violence or spreading disinformation.
“Democracy is not secured through bullying, lies, or propaganda. It is secured through law, truth, and the sovereign will of the Malawian people as declared by MEC,”the statement declared
The group further appealed to citizens to remain calm and vigilant while digital platforms and media outlets were urged to stop amplifying disinformation that could destabilize the nation.
As tensions remain high, CSEIF’s call comes at a critical moment when Malawians are anxiously awaiting MEC’s official results amid widespread speculation and heightened political rhetoric.
