Malawi’s Girl Champion to speak out about girls rights at the United Nations in New York today

NEW YORK-(MaraviPost)-As part of efforts to elevate the voices of Malawi’s girls, Save the Children is supporting a girl champion from Rumphi district in Malawi to speak at the International Day of The Girl summit at United Nations headquarters in New York.

The girl champion from Malawi is representing all girls from the Eastern and Southern Africa region at the summit.

This year, the theme of International Day of the Girl is;  “Girlforce: Unscripted and Unstoppable”.

The theme emphasizes  girls’ power and potential as well as celebrate achievements by and with girls.

The event brings together girls-rights organisations from across the globe and is a critical platform through which to influence policy makers and donors.

The event will call on policymakers, girls and their supporters to take concrete steps towards achieving the full realisation of girl’s rights.

The champion from Malawi is one of only a few girl activists selected from across the world to speak about the work they are doing to improve the lives of girls in their country.

She will speak at the 2019 Girls Speak Out session, and discuss a range of issues including child marriage, education and girl’s health.

“International Day of the Girl aims to promote girl’s empowerment and fulfilment of their human rights while also highlighting the challenges that girls all over the world face,” said Kim Koch, Save the Children’s Country Director in Malawi.

‘Save the Children believes self-advocacy by girls is the key for ensuring real and sustainable change for girls in their communities, which is why we have supported this champion and will continue to support herensure girls are empowered to speak up for themselves about the issues that affect their lives,” said Koch.

International Day of the Girl focuses global attention onto the ways in which girls are more likely to be denied their rights than boys.

Girl’s access to education, access to sexual and reproductive health, girls’ empowerment and equality, child marriage, and gender-based violence are all issues which negatively affect girls more than boys and often have a long-term impact on their lives and the future generations if not properly addressed.
