MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) says it has completed its investigation into the dubious recruitment of revenue and customs officers that Malawi Revenue Authority conducted in May this year.
According to ACB’s Director General, Reyneck Matemba, the bureau received a complaint regarding the wrongful recruitment at MRA, hence their quick intervention to halt the same pending thorough scrutiny.
“It is true that we have finished our investigation in relation to the recruitment of customs and revenue officers at MRA. You might remember that in around April, we restricted management of MRA from recruiting customs and revenue officers because of a complaint that we had received by that time. Like I have indicated, we have finished our investigation. There are a number of recommendations that we have made in relation to recruitment procedures or processes at Malawi Revenue Authority that took place and we will be writing government and management of MRA to look into some of the procedures that we had looked at when we were doing our investigations.
“Let me thank the people that were affected by the restriction notice which we had issued. We understand, we know there are others who are innocent; they were eligible to be recruited by MRA but we thank them for their patience and also our investigators because they worked very hard round the clock to make sure that we finish our investigations in relation to the recruitment that happened at MRA. We hope to be able to communicate to the people of Malawi through the media by Tuesday next week in relation to the findings which we came up with,” Matemba said.
The restriction from the recruitment of the new MRA officers came at a time there were serious allegations that top dogs of the previous Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led government presented names of party loyalists to MRA to employ them as a way of thanking their boot-licking.
Recently, ACB boss told the media that the regime change has provided the bureau with an enabling work environment as compared to the then government.
