Phiri knocks down Tanzanian Yona Segue in WBF title bout

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Hannock Mbulu Phiri`s victory on Friday, April 9, 2021, away in Tanzania has pleased Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board.

Hannock Phiri fought Tanzanian Yona Segue in the World Boxing Federation WBF all Africa title in Lightweight category which took place at Ubungo Plaza in Dar es Salaam,Tanzania which he won through Technical Knock Out (TKO) in round nine.

According to the general secretary of the board Johnny Palichesi Jnr said Phiri’s victory is a tremendous improvement in the sport.

Palichesi observes that the victory proved that Malawi has boxers who can represent their country well on international level.

Palichesi further said the development encourages boxers to win the fights through Technical Knock outs (TKO).

“Whenever our boxers are fighting outside the country, ringside officials use to favour their own boxers of which this time around the Hardknocker tactically did on Friday night in Tanzania.

“This should be an encouragement as other boxers do not put much efforts when playing international fights which has tarnished the image of Malawi Boxing of recent,” urges Palichesi.

Speaking from Tanzania after the fight Phiri said the win will help him much,saying if he manages to defend the WBF belt it will help him to fight more international fights arranged by World Boxing Council (WBC).
