BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Reports reaching this publication show that Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) member Billy Mayaya was on Wednesday severely hacked in the fracas that ensued between angry Malawians and HRDC demonstrators as they were marching along the Chipembere Highway.
HRDC was already planning to cause violence, targeting vendors, who defended themselves and Mayaya was a casualty.
Moses Kunkuyu, Campaign director for MCP, has confirmed to Nation Online and says Mayaya has since been taken to the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for treatment.
One CID from Southern Region Police, who opted for anonymity, said Mayaya has been “severely hacked.”
Teargas has also been fired at the demonstrators.
