Malawi’s Lilongwe man shoots wife..surrenders himself to police

Police launch manhunt

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Police at Lingadzi station are keeping in custody a 36 year old William Mark Phiri for suspected shooting his wife on the chest.

Salomy Chibwana Zgambo, Lingadzi police station publicist told The Maravi Post that the incident occurred on Sunday, December 15 at 49 Gulliver in the city around 02:00 hours.

Zgambo said the suspect Mark came to Lingadzi police and asked the police officer at reception for a medical report in exchange for bribe.

“The officer smelled a rat and asked him if he was involved in an accident since he was soaked with blood. Mark got angry with the question and went in his car saying that he made a mistake coming to police.

“The officer on reception notified the CID personal who went to where Mark packed his car and after confrontation, he was found with a piston. Te officer shot in the air to scare Mark who in return produced his piston but police managed to grab the piston from him.Mark was asked to follow the officers in the office but instead he drove off.

Later on Miss Rashida Bagus who is the sister to the accused wife together with the house help came to police and reported that Mr Mark shot his wife on the chest.

According to Victoria Phiri who is the house help, at around 20:00 hrs the victim left the house.

“Around 02:00 hours, I heard a knock on the window and the guard told me to open the door for my madam, which I did. After some minutes, I heard madam shouting as if she was in danger. I went out to see what was happening only to see my madam oozing blood from her chest”, narrated Victoria.


Victoria asked her boss what happened but she didn’t respond. Then the accused told the house help to get ready and take the wife to hospital. At the hospital, Mark told the house help that his wife shot herself.

Leaving the wife in theater room, Mark drove back to police and surrendered himself.

So far, the victim Mrs Waheeda Phiri Bagus is in critical condition receiving treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital.

William Mark Phiri 36 years, hails from Msulilongwe village traditional authority Mankhambira in Nkhatabay district.
