Mzuzu city council convid 19 Budget meeting reconvenes after a premature on Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

The abrupt end was due to different views on the MK35million budget which was presented to handle the Covid-19 pandemic in Mzuzu city.

Most councillors in the chamber was not comfortable with the way the budget was presented to them, but rather suggested that they could have been there where the budget was formulated while some said a hardcopy could have been given to them before the full council meeting for easy scrutiny.

Although the acting CEO Chrispine Banda tried to reason with the house, to say this was just an emergency, not a final budget but still more this didnt go well with councillors and some officials present.

“Were running short of time, covid 19 is real and we have to make use of the resources available. This is not the final budget,” says Banda.

In response to these arguments, the mayor for Mzuzu city councillor Kondwani Brian Nyasulu bowed down to the councillors demands by adjourning the meeting to Thursday morning to give room for the officials to come up with the printed version of the budget for easy scrutiny of the budget.

16 cases and two deaths has been recorded in Malawi, but the northern region has not yet reported any covid_19 case.

The Mzuzu city council is expected to come up with the MK35m budget response plan for Covid-19 by the end of business today.
