LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-UTM President Dalitso Kabambe has pledged to restructure Malawi’s fragile economy and uplift the living standards of its citizens if he is voted into power in the upcoming presidential elections on 16 September.
Speaking during whistle-stop rallies in the outskirts of Lilongwe, Kabambe described the dire economic situation as a national crisis that demands urgent leadership and a new direction.
He highlighted the struggles ordinary Malawians face daily, particularly the skyrocketing prices of essential goods and the declining state of the agricultural sector, which remains the backbone of the economy.
Kabambe promised that, under his administration, the agriculture sector would be revitalized through deliberate policy interventions aimed at empowering farmers and stabilizing prices.
He specifically pledged to reduce the cost of fertilizer to K55,000 per 50kg bag, arguing that affordable farm inputs are critical to ensuring food security and lowering the cost of living.
Kabambe explained that forex revenue generated from agricultural exports would be strategically redirected towards the importation of agricultural inputs, creating a sustainable system that cushions the local economy from shocks.
He drew a comparison with the past, noting that fertilizer prices, which stood at K18,000 in 2020, have since soared to an alarming K158,000 today, placing unbearable pressure on both farmers and consumers.
Kabambe also highlighted the price surge in staple foods, pointing out that a 10kg bag of maize which cost K16,000 in 2020 now sells at K138,000, warning that without intervention, the situation will only worsen.
“This needs immediate action or else the prices will continue skyrocketing,” Kabambe emphasized, reinforcing his promise of decisive and pragmatic reforms.
Supporting Kabambe’s vision, UTM Director of Operations Khwesi Msusa urged Malawians not to repeat past mistakes by voting for the same administration that has presided over economic decline.
Msusa warned that re-electing the current leadership would result in an even higher cost of living, worsening poverty levels, and diminishing prospects for economic recovery.
Kabambe’s message was warmly received by supporters in the outskirts of Lilongwe, who cheered his promise of lower fertilizer prices and renewed hope for affordable food.
As the elections draw closer, his economic message has become the central pillar of his campaign, reflecting the daily frustrations of Malawians grappling with unprecedented inflation and hardship.
Concluding Analysis
Dalitso Kabambe has emerged as the candidate who understands the struggles of ordinary Malawians and has presented practical, people-centered solutions to revive the economy.
His pledge to lower fertilizer prices to K55,000 per 50kg bag is not just a campaign promise, but a lifeline for millions of smallholder farmers whose livelihoods depend on affordable inputs.
By focusing on revitalizing the agricultural sector and ensuring that forex revenues are used responsibly to import farm supplies, Kabambe demonstrates foresight and economic discipline that Malawi desperately needs.
Unlike the current administration, which has presided over unprecedented price hikes and worsening poverty, Kabambe offers hope through a clear plan to stabilize food prices and reduce the unbearable cost of living.
His commitment to empowering the youth with access to business loans further positions him as a leader who is investing in the future, not just managing the present crisis.
Kabambe represents a break from failed leadership and empty promises — he embodies the possibility of a new beginning built on accountability, discipline, and vision.
If Malawians choose him on September 16, they will not just be voting for change, but for a leadership that is determined to restore dignity, prosperity, and opportunity for every household.
Dalitso Kabambe is the right leader at the right time — and his presidency would mark the turning point Malawi has been waiting for.
