HARARE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi under 20 National Women’s Football team has been booted out of 2020 FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup after going down to Zimbabwe 1-0 during qualifiers second leg match at Barbourfields Stadium on Saturday in Zimbabwe.
This is the preliminary stage of the 2020 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup Qualifiers in which Malawi was supposed to win to keep their hopes of sailing through to next round alive.
The young Scorchers drew one all with Zimbabwe in their first leg match at Kamuzu stadium in Blantyre. Zimbabwe has qualified to the next round of the competition with a superior goal aggregate of 2-1.
The junior She-Flames U20 coach Kondwani Mwalweni said her girls played very well and worked so had but he cannot understand why they failed to score when they had all the opportunities.
“Honestly, my players displayed good football and created chances but missed all of them. Our friends capitalised the opportunity they found and converted. I would say may be we were just unlucky.
“I have also noted that maturity is missing in this team; we gave them all the instructions but only to find out that they could not stick to those instructions. They are children, maybe that could be one factor but I hope this can make a good team in future,” said Mwalweni.
He added that it is important that Football Association of Malawi (FAM) should keep this team and have some regular trainings including friendly games so that the girls can grow as a team.
He said; “It is my hope that if FAM can manage to maintain this squad, we can have a good team in future. The only problem we have as a nation is that once this team goes back to Malawi, the players will no longer play together unless there is a competition, otherwise, it would be very helpful if we let the team keep training and grow together as a team.”
