BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s star forward, Temwa Chawinga, has been nominated for the prestigious 2025 Women’s Ballon d’Or award.
Chawinga, who plays for Kansas City Current in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), follows in the footsteps of her sister Tabitha, who was nominated for the award in 2024.
This year’s nomination recognizes Chawinga’s outstanding performance in the 2024 season, where she was crowned the NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner with 21 goals, though some reports indicate she scored 24 goals.
Her impressive skills on the field have earned her a place among the top 30 nominees for the Women’s Ballon d’Or.
Chawinga is joined by other notable players, including Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas, and Pernille Harder, in the running for the coveted award.
Zambia’s Barbra Banda is also among the nominees, making them the only African players shortlisted for the award this year.
The 2025 Women’s Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.
The award celebrates exceptional female footballers for their excellence, impact, and achievements over the past season.³
The nominees showcase a mix of experienced players and emerging talents, highlighting the growing competitiveness and depth in women’s football.
