Malawi’s unemployment crisis: 80 rushed to hospital over walk-in interviews’ stampede in Mzuzu

Job seekers ended up injured at Katoto Mzuzu

MZUZU-(MaraviPost)-About 80 people with various degree of injuries due to the fracas that broke out at Katoto secondary school hall in Mzuzu which was set as a venue for Health Surveillance Assistant (HSs),hospital attendant and ward clerk interviews slated for Tuesday, June 9, 2020.

Mzuzu central hospital’s spokesperson Arnold Kaira confirmed the incident saying injured persons are receiving treatment at the facility.

Various commentators have blamed the ministry of health for poor organisations of the interviews and advised that a lesson should be learnt to avoid the same occurrence in future.

Moses Mkandawire of the church and society in the synod of Livingstonia suggested that the ministry could have atleast divided number of days and time depending on qualification to ease the pressure.

“its unfortunate that our sons and daughter have been subjected to this torture while searching for un economic empowerment through these interviews,we ask the health officials to take good care of those injured for a quick recovery.”said Mkandawire

His counterpart Charles Kajoloweka of Youth and Society faulted the ministry for the poor timing considering this time of Covid-19 pandemic.

Kanjoloweka therefore urged youth to learn a lesson and choose good leaders who can deal with unemployment in Malawi.

It is still unknown as of when the interviews will resume because by 11a:m nothing has been done as the venue has been shifted to Katoto secondary school ground.

The ministry plans to hire 2000 health workers in an efforts to deal with shortages of staffs in Malawi hospitals due to covid-19 pandemic.
