Man slapped with 20 yr-jail term for splashing acid on woman’s face

A 26 year-old man, Peter Nyundo, from Likhalo village, Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba, has been slapped with 20 years and 12 months sentences for causing grievous harm and obtaining money by false pretence contrary to Section 235 and 319 of the Penal Code, respectively.

Nyundo was convicted and sentenced by the Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Malawi’s northern city of Mzuzu on Monday.

State Prosecutor, Sergeant Felix Senzani told the court that Nyundo splashed acid at the face of the 18 year-old Mary Kuyokwa in October last year and victim consequently lost her sight.

Kuyokwa, who hails from Yafeti Village, T/A Mwenemsuku in Chitipa, was working as an Airtel Malawi Agent at a kiosk near St Andrews CCAP Church within the city.

“On October 17, 2016 the convict approached Kuyokwa and asked for cash transfer of K103,800.00 from the agent to cell phone number 0994 120 600 of which by evidence from Airtel it bears the name of Peter Nyundo.

“After transferring the money to his Airtel Money account, Kuyokwa demanded the cash from the convict, but instead of complying, the convict fished out a bottle and splashed the contents on Kuyokwa’s face. Kuyokwa fell down and it was later on known that the bottle contained acid,” explained Senzani.

The convict was apprehended by the general public after the victim had cried for help and took him to Mzuzu Police Station.

“Nyondo pleaded not guilty and witnesses were paraded. Among witnesses was medical practitioner from Mzuzu Central Hospital who testified that Kuyokwa is now permanently blind due to the impact of the acid,” he added.

And his judgment Chief Resident Magistrate Texas Masoaphambe said what the convict did was inhumane and gave him a 20 year jail term for causing bodily harm and 12 months for stealing the money.

The sentences will run concurrently.
