BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a heartbreaking turn of events, a tragic accident has claimed the lives of five children in the Senior Chief Chowe area of Mangochi.

The incident, which occurred on the evening of March 9, 2024, has left the community in shock and mourning.

The five young victims, four girls and a boy, were identified as Leticia Maulana (6), Hawa Maulana (12), Leticia Katuli (6), Meshezabel Chibatiro (9), and Jazaka Hassan (8).

These innocent souls were simply picking fruits under a tree, just 5 meters from the road, when tragedy struck.

According to Eastern Region Police spokesperson, Patrick Mussa, the accident involved a 15-tonne truck with Registration Number SA6421ERF driven by Sinoya Witman (50) from Namwera.

The truck was carrying 350 bags of relief maize flour for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs as it made its way towards Mangochi town.

The driver, descending Chowe Hills, faced a harrowing situation as his brakes failed, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

The truck swerved off the road, hitting the minors who were innocently going about their day, before overturning twice.

The aftermath of the accident left the community in despair, with families and friends of the victims struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss.

The children, who were cherished members of their community, will be remembered for their playful spirits, bright smiles, and promising futures cut short in an instant.

As news of the tragedy spread, an outpouring of grief and support flooded in from across Mangochi and beyond.

The senseless loss of innocent lives has sparked conversations about road safety, vehicle maintenance, and the protection of vulnerable road users, particularly children.

The driver, Sinoya Witman, has since been admitted to Mangochi District Hospital following the accident. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with authorities seeking to understand the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome.

In the wake of this tragedy, the community has come together to mourn, support one another, and seek justice for the lives lost. Vigils, prayers, and community gatherings have been organized to honor the memory of the five children and offer solace to their grieving families.

As the sun sets over the hills of Mangochi, a somber mood hangs heavy in the air, a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.

The loss of these five young souls has left an indelible mark on the community, serving as a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance and care on the roads.

As we mourn the tragic loss of Leticia, Hawa, Leticia, Meshezabel, and Jazaka, let us also reflect on the lessons to be learned from this devastating accident. May their memories be a blessing and may their spirits live on in the hearts of those who loved them.
