LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Madam Mary Chilima, wife to immediate past vice President and UTM party President Saulos Chilima on Mother’s day attended and Autism awareness seminar held in Lilongwe where she called for improved education for children with special needs across the country.

UTM Shadow MP for Lilongwe Mpenu Rev. Fletcher Matandika organised a seminar to raise awareness and get the conversation going on persons with Autism in Malawi.

The discussion specifically centered around children with Autisim and the gap in multi-sectoral support available to them and their families.

“It was truly an eye-opening experience as I have a desire to improve education for children with special needs across Malawi,” said Madam Chilima.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. It is a spectrum condition, which means that, while all people with Autism share certain difficulties, their condition will affect them in different ways.

Rev Matandika said he felt it important to organize the awareness seminar to help people understand more about Autism.

“My desire is to make Malawi a better place for children with Autism by spearheading programs that offer services aimed at helping them develop to their fullest potential,” said  Rev. Matandika.
