Mayor Noel Chalamanda has appealed to City residents to look after trees which the Council in partnership with various corporates is planting in fragile areas.
Chalamanda was speaking on Friday (March 11, 2016) during the planting of trees along Mudi river organized by Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC).
The Mayor said the efforts to bring back the trees in fragile areas which were cut wantonly would be futile if residents do not take responsibility of looking after them.
“If we come next year to plant trees here, then we have failed,” said Chalamanda. “PWC has done us a good favour and I call on other organisations to emulate this.”
He said that cutting down trees carelessly has brought so many devastating effects. He advised the residents and companies to avoid disposing waste into the Mudi River.
“We must take responsibility and report all those cutting down trees to relevant authorities so they should be arrested,” he said.
PwC Partner, Ranwell Mbene said their company tackles a lot of issues, sustainable development being one of them.
He added that in joining hands with the Council in tree planting exercise, the company was staying true to the messages and policies they advocate for.
“We are professional firm that tackles a wide range of issues and environmental management is one of the critical issues we handle, and we believe we must lead in conserving the environment,” said Mbene.
The tree planting exercises is one of the series of events in the Keep Blantyre City Clean and Green initiative which the Council is championing
