MCHINJI (MaraviPost)—Cleaners at Mchinji hospital forced a pregnant woman to deliver outside the hospital on Wednesday, Maravi Post can reveal.According to eye witnesses, the woman was blocked to meet with the midwives by the cleaners as claiming no one is allowed in when they are mopping.
“What happened was that the woman asked to meet with the nurses after feeling the delivery signs. However, the cleaners denied her to enter saying it is not allowed to do so while they are mopping,” said eye witnesses.
“The woman pleaded but to no avail. She then sat down outside the hospital and delivered the child herself,” they added.
They said the nurses came to rescue her after the development.
However, one of the top officials at the hospital Emmanuel Mpowera trashed the allegation.
In most of the public hospitals in Malawi, patients are not allowed to enter the hospitals by Cleaners especially if they are doing their mandated job without looking at the condition of the patient(s).
This is just an example of how patients are being ill-treated by the hospital cleaners.
Meanwhile, some civil societies have condemned the development describing it as evil.
They said such kind of behavior forced pregnant women to stop going to the hospital and instead resort to visiting traditional birth attendance or witchdoctors, a development that fuels maternal and neonatal deaths in the country.
