Malawi Congress Party members in the diaspora have welcomed the working relationship move the party has announced with Freedom party leader and former Vice president Khumbo Kachali .

Announcing this, the spokesperson for MCP Diaspora Wing Chalo Mvula said, Khumbo Kachali is a good strategic addition to the party and the move will reinforce the party position in the north. “ As diaspora MCP members , we are happy with the endorsement our leader Dr Chakwera has got from Khumbo Kachali and the start of this working relationship- Khumbo is a well-respected politician who has a lot of influence especially in the northern region of Malawi” said Mvula.

On Sunday, MCP president Lazarus Chakwera flanked by his running mate Sidik Mia and second Vice president Harry Mkandawire addressed a press conference in Blantyre. Among other issues that included Chakwera resigning as Member of Parliament and leader of opposition, they introduced Khumbo Kachali as a working partner. As the date of the general election approaches, political parties have been busy trying to strike alliance deals “2019 elections will be won with effective strategy, and winning elections is all about the numbers and that’s why we are not surprised with all these parties trying to form alliances. We however, feel by working with Khumbo Kachali MCP has made a golden strategic move. The people of the North knows it’s only MCP that will take good care of the region as it has always been ignored by the previous regimes” Mvula said.

Khumbo Kachali is a seasoned politician who political journey saw him became a cabinet minister in late Bingu wa Mutharika’s Government. Born in 1966, he has held several cabinet positions that includes Minister of Industry, Science & Technology (2004-2006), Deputy Minister for Home Affairs & Internal Security (2006-2007) and Minister of Youth Development & Sports (2007-2008) and Minister of Health between 2008 and 2009. He eventually became the Vice president of the country under Joyce Banda but was not picked as her running mate in 2004 elections. Khumbo Kachali finally formed his own political party called Freedom Party in 2017. He has recently been known to be a critic of current vice president and UTM leader Saulos Chilima often questioning why the incumbent Vice president is not resigning from his post.

Khumbo has been known to have the eagle eye of endorsing election winners. He is on record of endorsing Bakili Muluzi in 1999, Bingu Wa Mutharika in 2004 and 2009 and with only a few days to go before 2004 elections he endorsed Peter Mutharika and all his endorsements have ended up victorious. It has also been pointed out that Joyce Banda failed to accumulate a lot of votes in Mzimba after her dropping of Khumbo as a potential running mate.
