The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has scheduled to hold series of regional committees’ elections in a bid to strengthen the party’s structures at the grass root level a head of 2019 elections.
This comes amid political squabbles in the southern region which erupted some months ago as some members did not want the current southern leadership due to incompetency to revamp the party’s muscle in the region.
Apart from plans to hold the regional elections across the nation, the party has also restructured its National Executive Committee (NEC) as Maxwell Thyolera is the newly appointed Director of Elections replacing Henry Kamata who is now the deputy director of political affairs.
Disclosing the development during the press conference the party held on Wednesday in the capital Lilongwe, MCP’s Director of Elections Maxwell Thyolera and the Party’s Spokes Person, Dr Jessie Kabwira said the regional committee elections aimed at strengthening the party at grass root level by putting competent people who are to carry the party’s victory in 2019 elections.
Thyolera disclosed that 90 positions will be contested in all regions namely south, east, centre and north and districts such that southern region will kick start the elections which is scheduled to take place on June 20, 2015 in the commercial city of Blantyre with 9 positions open to the party members including regional chairman, secretary and treasure, regional youth director, secretary and treasure and also regional women league chairperson, secretary and treasure.
“Every three years the party’s constitution stipulates that elections must be held in all regions hence this arrangement. The elections also aimed at empowering our grass root supporters in building the party by putting workable team which can win general elections.
“We are to start with the southern region where its our integral part with so much potential for the next general elections. After the south, were to go to other regions then in the districts so that by end of this year all party structures are put in place.
“The elections will reflect the party’s transparency, accountability and democratic in running its affairs which the general public can still trust when it will carry the reins of power in 2019 as we have proven to be the only party that can bail Malawians from social-economic turmoil currently going through”, assures Thyolera.
On MCP’s NEC restructuring, Dr Kabwira said the move aimed at strengthening the main body of the party as a wining formula for the next elections saying the process will continue where the need might be.
“It pleased the Party’s President, Dr Chakwera to make such appointment as a building process that such decision was agreed upon by NEC. This will be the continual process till the party is satisfied to feature its team in 2019 elections which we are leaving any stone unturned. Malawians have suffered more than enough that they need a trusted leadership which is in MCP”, assures Dr. Kabwira.
