DEDZA-(MaraviPost)-As days ahead of the November 16, 2023, Dedza Central Constituency By-elections draw closer, the Malawi Congress Party MCP has reiterated the need for party followers in the area to remain united in an effort to retain the candidacy of the area.
MCP Regional Chairman for the Centre Patrick Zebron Chilondola said this as the party launched its official campaign trail ahead of the polls.
He emphasized the need for all members of the party to rally behind their candidate arguing divisions might give room to other parties to penetrate the seat.
“Divisions in a house always give room for opponents to penetrate, so my message today is that let us unite and rally behind our candidate. We want the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to continue spurring development,” said Chilondola.
Chilondola added that they remain committed to ensuring that there is no political violence during the period.
“We promote issue-based campaigns, and that is the spirit of MCP. Political violence scares electorates, so my message is that let us all unite until the best candidate wins,” he added.
On his part, guest of honor at the event Moses Kunkuyu assured the gathering that the government has fine-tuned this year’s Affordable Input Program (AIP) saying it is to roll out soon.
“I can assure the nation that we have learnt of the challenges that rocked the past AIP, we have put in place measures to alleviate the same. Details will be announced on Tuesday before the President launches the program,” said Kunkuyu.
Asked on what he has prepared if constituents give him the seat, candidate Willard Gwengwe said he wants to continue development activities that the late Daniel Chiwere stopped.
He said through community structures of the area, he will jointly work with them to make sure that the area is developed.
He added that the party is currently mobilizing people through different engagements to make sure that a good number of people turn out on the voting day.
“We have established that low turnout is common during by-elections, as a party we are always on the ground engaging people in this constituency on the need to exercise their right by coming out and vote for their candidate,” he added
