LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and the UTM Party have reiterated their commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of women across the country.
Speaking at a joint women’s empowerment forum held in Lilongwe, representatives from both parties emphasized the importance of inclusive governance and gender-responsive policies.
MCP National Women’s Director, Grace Chiumia, highlighted the strides the party has taken to promote women in leadership, stating that MCP remains determined to create an environment where women can thrive politically, socially, and economically.
She noted that empowering women is not only a moral obligation but a strategic investment in national development.
Chiumia urged all political parties to prioritize women’s issues not just during campaigns, but as a long-term governance principle.
On her part, UTM’s Deputy Secretary General, Dr. Patricia Kaliati, reaffirmed her party’s unwavering support for the welfare of women and girls.
Kaliati stressed that UTM believes in action, not just rhetoric, citing the appointment of women in key positions as a testament to the party’s gender-sensitive agenda.
She called on more women to rise and claim their space in the political arena, saying the future of Malawi depends on equal representation and participation.
Both leaders condemned all forms of violence against women, especially during political activities, calling for the enforcement of laws that protect women from abuse and harassment.
They further appealed to traditional leaders, religious institutions, and civil society organizations to partner in ending harmful practices such as child marriages, which continue to rob girls of their potential.
The forum, attended by hundreds of women from various districts, served as a platform to share experiences and propose practical solutions to challenges women face.
Participants expressed optimism that the collaboration between MCP and UTM on gender issues will inspire other political groupings to follow suit.
The event concluded with a resolution to establish a joint task force that will monitor and promote women’s rights initiatives within the two parties and beyond.
As Malawi moves towards the 2025 elections, this renewed commitment by MCP and UTM signals a growing recognition that the country’s development cannot be achieved without the full inclusion and well-being of its women.
