BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost)-In a shocking incident that unfolded in Mzuzu City, an MDF Lieutenant found himself caught in a violent altercation with a sex worker.
The incident, which occurred after a potential client refused to pay the agreed fee following an encounter, highlights the dangers faced by sex workers and sheds light on the complexities of their profession.
This is one of shameful incidences need to dig further for both the victim and sex workers aimed at striving to understand the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident and the wider issues lurking beneath the surface.
The victim Phiri was looking for some late-night enjoyment after a long day at work.
He had visited Paris Night Club and, encountering Hawa Shaibu, he offered to take her along to Big Elephant for drinks.
However, they were met with closure of all drinking establishments in Luwinga.
Deciding to return to Paris Night Club, Lt. Phiri dropped off his colleagues and continued his journey with the accused.
Lt. Phiri describes the events leading up to the altercation: “We agreed on a fee of MK4,000.00, but I only had oral sex with her and paid her MK3,000.00. Unfortunately, she became angered and attacked me.”
Hawa Shaibu, the accused sex worker, recounts her side of the story: “I trusted Lieutenant Phiri when he promised to pay the agreed fee, but he only paid me MK3,000.00 after the encounter.
“I was already struggling to make ends meet, and this injustice triggered my anger. I admit to attacking him out of frustration with a bottle, but it was never my intention to cause serious harm.”
This distressing incident raises important questions surrounding the plight of sex workers and the broader issues they face.
A closer look reveals that many individuals enter the sex industry due to limited economic opportunities, often driven by desperation and lack of support.
While their work may be illegal, violence against them is unjustifiable.
Dr. Eliza Banda, a psychologist with experience working with marginalized populations, explains: “Sex workers often face stigmatization, violence, and limited access to healthcare, perpetuated by their marginalized status in society.
“To address these issues, we need to focus on creating safe environments, raising awareness, and providing avenues for assistance and rehabilitation.”
The unfortunate incident between Lieutenant Maxon Job Phiri and Hawa Shaibu is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by sex workers and the urgent need for support and education.
It emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive society that addresses the complex realities of those involved in the sex industry.
By providing avenues for rehabilitation and offering support systems, we can begin to address the underlying issues that perpetuate violence and societal marginalization.
