LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-The Malawi Electoral Commission’s (MEC) Chief Elections Officer, Davie Mpesi, has resumed work despite being arrested a a couple of weeks ago for alleged abuse of office.
Mpesi was spotted at Chadzuka FP School in Mchinji, where he was performing his duties, and later at Waliranji, where he met with the Director of Civic and Voter Education.
The move has sparked controversy, with many questioning why Mpesi is still holding office while facing allegations.
When contacted for comment, MEC Public Relations Manager Sangwani Mwafulirwa’s phone went unanswered.
Social and political commentator Mathews Namukhoyo believes the DPP government should take decisive action and send Mpesi on leave pending investigation.
“Davie Mpesi himself needs to go on leave. If he doesn’t, then the government must suspend him while he is being investigated,” Namukhoyo said.
Rumors have also surfaced that MEC Chairperson Annabel Ntalimanja is favoring Mpesi, with some alleging she is failing to act due to personal bias.
“It’s surprising that the chairperson, who is a lawyer and knows the procedures, is not taking action,” a source said.
The allegations against Mpesi stem from his time in office, and many are calling for a thorough investigation.
