LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja has revealed that a partial audit of the election system has been carried out through the issuance of copies of the voters’ register to key stakeholders.
She explained that the exercise allowed political parties, civil society organisations (CSOs), and other actors to verify and cross-check the accuracy of voters’ names as per their request.
Speaking during a meeting with CSOs on election matters in Mzuzu, Mtalimanja emphasized that this verification process was crucial in enhancing transparency and boosting public confidence ahead of the September 16 General Elections.
She further noted that the commission is committed to ensuring the credibility of the electoral process by involving all stakeholders in critical stages of the preparations.
The MEC chairperson also called on CSOs to continue monitoring and supporting the electoral process to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.
Observers have welcomed the move, describing it as an important step toward safeguarding the integrity of the voter register and preventing potential irregularities on polling day.
This partial audit of the voters’ register could significantly influence public trust in MEC as it demonstrates a proactive effort to ensure accountability and accuracy in the electoral process.
By empowering stakeholders to verify the register, MEC reduces the chances of disputes over voter rolls, which have historically fueled post-election tensions in Malawi.
If complemented by a full system audit and consistent transparency measures, this initiative could strengthen confidence among voters and political parties, making the 2025 elections more credible and widely accepted.
