Media Council pledges safety, support for journalists as Malawi enters into campaign season

LILONGWE–(MaraviPost)-As Malawi’s electoral campaign period begins, the Media Council of Malawi (MCM) has pledged to protect and support journalists to ensure safe, ethical, and professional reporting.

Speaking to Maravi Post on Wednesday, July 16, MCM Executive Director Moses Kaufa urged journalists to uphold professionalism, accuracy, and fairness.

“Our message is clear: report facts, be balanced, and engage respectfully with all political actors,” said Kaufa. “We’re ready to support journalists facing any threats or challenges.”

He said to strengthen safety, MCM has partnered with the Malawi Police Service to set up a rapid response system for cases of violence or harassment. Journalists are also receiving safety training and psychological support when needed.

Kaufa said MCM is equipping journalists with vital resources via digital platforms, including updates on electoral laws, codes of conduct, and reporting tips. The Council is also running media literacy campaigns in partnership with Africa Check to counter misinformation and hate speech.

In collaboration with MEC, political parties, police, UNESCO, the EU, and NED, MCM is promoting media freedom and ethical journalism through stakeholder engagement.

“Special focus is being placed on supporting female journalists. Through partnerships with AWOME and the Gender Justice Unit, MCM is offering legal, psychosocial support, and mentorship networks to empower women in the media,”He said.

MCM will also monitor media conduct during the campaign, and journalists who breach professional standards may face disciplinary measures.

“We’re not here to censor, but to maintain public trust and uphold journalism standards,” Kaufa stressed.

He added that MCM will participate in the Election Broadcasts Monitoring and Complaints Committee, chaired by MEC, to ensure accountability in election coverage.

Post-election, MCM plans to review media performance to improve future reporting strategies.

Kaufa concluded by urging political leaders and the public to safeguard media freedom.

“Freedom of the press is a pillar of democracy. Let’s ensure journalists operate without fear or intimidation,” he said.

MCM’s proactive approach highlights the essential role of a free and safe media in Malawi’s democratic process.
