On Saturday, 5 July 2025, The Maravi Post discovered a remarkable grassroots innovation in Kaphiri, a peri-urban area on the outskirts of Malawi’s capital city, Lilongwe.
In this modest community, a local man has taken initiative into his own hands by designing and producing maize sheller machines aimed at easing the burden of post-harvest processing for farmers.
Each maize sheller is being sold at a cost of MWK 2.3 million, a price considered affordable compared to imported alternatives with similar capacities.
Despite the price tag, the machine is already drawing attention due to its impressive capacity to shell over 100 bags of maize, making it highly efficient for both smallholder and medium-scale farmers.
The innovator, who is self-trained in mechanical fabrication, says he was motivated by the challenges faced by local farmers during harvest seasons, particularly the laborious and time-consuming manual shelling process.
He explained that many farmers suffer post-harvest losses because they cannot process their crops fast enough to take advantage of market opportunities or avoid spoilage.
By introducing a faster, locally built sheller, he believes he is contributing not only to agricultural productivity but also to rural economic empowerment.
Farmers in Kaphiri and surrounding areas have started booking appointments to use the sheller or purchase one outright, viewing it as a worthwhile investment that will improve their harvest outcomes and reduce operational costs.
The shellers are assembled using locally sourced materials and basic engineering tools, showcasing the potential for homegrown innovation to solve Malawi’s persistent agricultural bottlenecks.
The machine’s introduction also has employment benefits, as the innovator has recruited a small team of young people from the community to help with production and maintenance, creating job opportunities where few exist.
Local leaders have expressed admiration for the project and called on government agencies and development partners to support such initiatives with funding, training, and technical resources.
They argue that such innovations could transform agricultural value chains if rolled out more broadly across the country.
This development comes at a time when Malawi is pushing for increased mechanization and value addition in agriculture as part of its national development strategy.
