LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-State-funded Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has expressed excitement at the declining cases of abductions, attacks and killings of persons with albinism in Malawi.

Speaking at the International Albinism Awareness Day recently, MHRC Commissioner Boniface Massah observed that there has been a significant reduction in cases of violation of the rights of persons with albinism.

Massah commended the President Lazarus Chakwera’s administration for taking bold steps to eliminate the vice.

“This is encouraging. But we would like to appeal to the government to engage an extra gear in safeguarding the rights of persons with albinism,” he said.

Massah said majority of the persons with albinism are still living in fear and cannot enjoy their socio-economic rights because of absence of services in public facilities such as hospitals.

He cited lack of sunscreen lotion in most public health facilities as one of the major challenges the community is facing.

“Our members are still dying of cancer, which is caused by lack of protection on their skin,” he said.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Isaac Katopola, said the ministry has put in a number of mechanisms for ensuring that the rights of persons with albinism are safeguarded at all times.
