Minibus Owners Association of Malawi-MOAM has publicly expressed their grievances that the introduction of the Bajaaj, a three wheeler motorbike that is become popular with its convenience in short distances travels is affecting their business and profits.
Speaking in an interview with Media, Secretary General for MOAM, Coxley Kamange said the Bajaajs are operated by foreigners, which is very unfortunate.
“The business most Malawians know after graduating from selling tomatoes is operating minibuses, so it is very sad that foreigners are going to externalize the forex because the profits are going to be externalized,” said Kamange.
On the other hand Ministry of Transportation and Public Infrastructure has said they are currently looking into the matter and they will make sure the business is for the benefit of Malawians.
Government also said they will look into which roads the Bajaaj should operate on and any other issues MOAM rose concerning the motorcycles.
The Bajaaj carries at least 3 passengers and can move about areas where minibuses are not allowed by law.
