It was in Sanya, on a tropical Chinese island known as Hainan, where the world got a beauty queen! She was dressed in a gorgeous coral-coloured gown, lost in her silence as she waited for the call of her name. Sharing the stage with Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan of Thailand while the rest of the resplendent ladies watched from behind, she almost visualised herself as queen. But the thought could not go away that Miss Thailand was so beautiful, and she can be the Miss World of 2018. In a lapse of seconds, it was no longer a mystery… amongst mounting tension and pounding hearts, it was heard… MISS MEXICO!
She goes by the name Vanessa Ponce, aged 26, the first Mexican to be crowned as Miss World. There is no doubt on that, history was made on the crowning night. With her tears of happiness almost escaping her eyes, she was seated on her throne. Miss World 2017, the exquisite Manushi Chhillar was ready to crown her successor, lifting the gem-studded crown from her head to crown the new beauty icon of 2018. Vanessa was granted her moment, as she walked the stage, waving and saluting the audience, as the proud and grateful Miss World 2018.
Miss World is not only a beauty pageant! It is a journey, an experience! Vanessa Ponce was followed by Miss Thailand, a lady of charisma and elegance, for sure! Nicolene became Thailand’s first ever 1st Runner Up on Miss World Stage, marking the best performance in Thailand’s beauty pageant history.
New ladies rose from the ashes during the 2018’s edition of Miss World. And if we’re talking about achievements, Miss Uganda, Quiin Abenakyo is to be included in the list! Not only did she become Miss Uganda at the age of 22 but she also bears the title of Miss World Africa 2018. During the Miss World Event, she was paired with Miss Argentina, Victoria Soto, for the head to head segment. In this round, Abenakyo talked about her support for the project “Fighting Teenage Pregnancies” which earned her the votes of all three judges, propelling her to the Top 30 of the competition. On the final night, she shared the stage as among the Top 5, a commendable achievement for Uganda. It was the first time someone from the country reached so high!
Miss World Pageants is also a perfect moment to have a view at the exceptional fashion sense of the ladies around the world. Miss Philippines, Katarina Rodriguez brandished a National costume by Francis Libiran inspired by the Kalinga Tribe. Trinidad and Tobago delegate, Ysabal Bisnath, wowed her fans with a phenomenal national costume that was named Celebration Of Our People. It featured an amazing blend of colours and designs that represented the country’s multicultural and ethnic heritage. Not to forget the exceptional jewels that reminded us ofat Lucky Pants Bingo. The slot game offers 5-reels and an array of features for some impressive amounts of fun. The entertaining game by Scientific Games ensures that the thrill is ever present!
Vanessa Ponce has one year to realise her projects and travel around the world to share her words and inspiration. Last year’s Miss World constantly travelled around countries to make her idea of a better world, a reality. Let’s hope that Ponce follows the same line of thought. Who knows, in which corner of the world is our next Miss World right now!
