LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-About MK2 billion has been set towards the implementation of the Malawi Girls Can Code Too’s innovation project.
The project aims at transforming youth to digital migration while targeting 7500 girls and boys aged 15-25.
The project seeks to promote mindset change participation of girls in ICT.
UN Women Country Representative, Letty Chiwala disclosed this in Lilongwe on Monday, October 8, 2023, during the kick-off meeting of Malawi Girls Can Code Too’s project.
Chiwala said the research shows that more men used the internet compared to women and women only account for 28 percent of science researchers while males dominate 72 percent.
“The project starts at a right time when consented efforts are being made to reduce the digital gender divide necessary for inclusion, gender equality, and economic growth of this country,” said Chiwara
She added that the project seeks to create a shared understanding and ownership among partners and stakeholders.
In her remarks, Ministry of Education representative, Rachel Chimbwete Phiri said the program will change the mindset of people in promoting gender equality by empowering girls through ICT and coding.
The project which started in 2019 is targeting 20 secondary schools both rural and urban.
The project is expected to target eight districts including, Dowa, Lilongwe, Dedza, Balaka, Zomba, Blantyre, and Thyolo with funding from the Ireland Embassy.
