The Moroccan ambassador to Malawi, Abdelkader Naji, has vehemently denied a video circulating on social media that claims Moroccan authorities have killed 700 African migrants.
The video, which has been widely shared, alleges that Morocco has declared it does not want any black people in the country.
However, Ambassador Naji has described the video as “regrettable” and claimed that the author’s intention was to offend the Kingdom of Morocco and its relations with African people.
Naji clarified that the incident referred to in the video occurred on June 24, 2022, when a large group of illegal migrants attacked a police station in the Nador region of northern Morocco.
According to Naji, the migrants had entered Morocco via Algeria with the intention of illegally migrating to Europe.
The incident resulted in the arrest of several migrants, but Naji emphasized that there were no deaths.
Naji condemned the dissemination of the video, stating that it was part of a malicious attempt to spread disinformation and damage Morocco’s image.
He emphasized that Morocco welcomes all African brothers, provided they respect the country’s immigration laws, which are designed to protect migrants and preserve security and stability.
Morocco’s migrant integration policy is a strategic path that enriches the diversity and vitality of Moroccan society, Naji added.
The ambassador’s statement is consistent with Morocco’s historical position as a welcoming country for migrants and refugees.
Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the treatment of migrants in Morocco, particularly in the Nador region.
In June 2022, at least 23 African migrants died during an attempt to cross into the Spanish enclave of Melilla, according to Human Rights Watch.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation and calls for an investigation.
While Ambassador Naji’s statement denies any wrongdoing by Moroccan authorities, it is essential to acknowledge the concerns raised by human rights organizations and the need for transparency and accountability in the treatment of migrants.
The Moroccan ambassador’s dismissal of the video alleging the massacre of African migrants highlights the need for accurate information and transparency in the treatment of migrants.
While Morocco’s migrant integration policy is commendable, it is essential to address concerns raised by human rights organizations and ensure that the rights of migrants are respected and protected.
