Motorbike Robbers Kills Owner; Arrested in Malawi’s lake shore district of Nkhotakota

Police have arrested two people in connection to the brutal murder of a motorbike taxi operator Sydney Chibweza in Nkhotakota district.

The two Hopeson Pinto (29) and Maliko Jambolani Mbewe (34) are both from Bamba village, in senior chief Mwadzama area in Nkhotakota district and have since been arrested at Mkaika and Dwangwa trading centre respectively.

 

On March 12, 2015 the deceased Sydney Chibweza 26 a motorbike taxi operator at Mkaika trading centre was approached and hired by the suspects to Bamba village.

But since it was already night, they promised to leave early the following morning to Bamba village about 30 kilometers away from Maika trading centre.

The following morning March 13, as agreed,they started their journey but upon arrival at Chitsulo village the suspects mercilessly stabbed Chibweza and dumped him at a bush far from the road.

After the killing, disagreement erupted by the criminals on who should take the motorbike, later, Maliko Jambolani Mbewe took the motorbike while Hopeson Pinto took maize flour which was on motorbike carrier.

A young brother to the deceased Masauko Chibweza after noticing that his brother was not coming home as usual started tracing his brother’s whereabouts.

Some people who identified one of the suspects on the hired motorbike told Masauko of the suspect’s identities, who later reported the issue to police.

Police on March 14 arrested the identified suspect Hopeson Pinto (29), and discovered a bag of maize flour belonging to the deceased in his house.

Thereafter, the suspect Pinto led the police to the place where they murdered and dumped Chibweza.

On 16 March, police arrested Pinto’s colleague Maliko Jambolani Mbewe at Dwangwa trading centre who disclosed the whereabouts of the motorbike.

Police have since recovered Riko motorbike at Malomo in Ntchisi district.

The postmortem results conducted at Nkhotakota district hospital have revealed that the death was due to excessive lose of blood.

The suspects have since remanded at Nkhotakota prison.
